Scandal May Bring Down Tony Blair’s Government
by Ian Mosley
George W. Bush may well lose his pet poodle (Tony Blair) very soon. It appears increasingly likely that British Prime Minister Tony Blair will resign in disgrace over his involvement in a burgeoning financial and political corruption scandal, the center of which appears to be one of Britain’s most prominent Jews, Lord Levy. It has also been revealed through leaks from Number Ten Downing Street that Blair himself has been questioned twice by his own Fraud Squad over a recurring financial scandal down through British history–the sale of honors.
For those Americans unfamiliar with the British system, every year the government issues what’s called an “Honors List” where prominent British citizens get various kinds of awards and decorations, up to and including knighthood and elevation to the peerage. There are also a number of civilian decorations such as OBE (Order of the British Empire). It used to be that these honors went to great explorers like Sir Richard Burton, great generals like Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener, great actors like Sir John Gielgud and Sir Laurence Olivier, great writers like Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie–but as the twentieth century progressed, an increasing number of Jews and trashy “celebrities” snuck in, which is how we end up with the likes of “Sir Elton John.” The system has always been open to abuse, and beginning with heavy Jewish infiltration of the peerage in the 1920s, every ten or fifteen years or so there’s an “honors for cash” scandal. This one looks especially juicy.
The British Daily Mail reports that “Labour’s chief fundraiser Lord Levy has been arrested over allegations he tried to cover up the cash for honours scandal. In a development that stunned Downing Street, the peer, a close friend of Tony Blair, was detained over new offences of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. He is alleged to have lied to police and attempted to conceal or suppress potentially vital evidence. His arrest came less than a fortnight after one of the Prime Minister’s closest aides, director of Government relations Ruth Turner, was arrested for perverting the course of justice….Labour MPs are planning to demand [Blair] resign if anyone in the Downing Street circle is charged with an offence.”
The Mail continues: “The cash for honours inquiry was prompted by a complaint by Scottish National Party MP Angus MacNeil that financial support was being rewarded with honours in contravention of a 1925 anti-corruption law.” [That shows how long this nonsense has been going on.] “Mr MacNeil told BBC News 24 that everybody in Westminster was “agog” at the latest development and it was “very serious indeed” for Downing Street…He said of Lord Levy: ‘This of course is the man who’s been closest to Tony Blair in the whole fundraising escapade for Labour.’…Lord Levy is Labour’s chief fundraiser and a friend of Tony Blair. Popularly known as “Lord Cashpoint”, he forged links with Mr Blair soon after the now Prime Minister became Labour leader in 1994. The pair met at an Israeli diplomatic dinner and famously became tennis partners and friends soon afterwards.” Curiously, the Republican Congress gained a reputation for corruption thanks to bribes doled out by lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Incredibly, the Mail tells us: “Friends of Lord Levy have played down the latest arrest. It is the third time he has been arrested - after being released on bail last July and last September over cash for honours allegations. Lord Levy reiterated that he had done nothing wrong in statement released by a spokesman.” The three arrests were due to anti-Semitism, no doubt.” Last week it was claimed that detectives have discovered potentially crucial emails which were apparently exchanged between Lord Levy, Miss Turner and Mr Powell. They were said to be “indiscreet” and referred directly to “K’s and P’s” [knighthoods and peerages] being offered to those who have donated money
[to Blair and the Labour Party].”
If Blair is forced out early (he has already stated his intention to resign in the summer), then where will that leave Bush when he seeks British assistance in his forthcoming attack on Iran?
