More Depravity in High Places

On September 19th I wrote a column on the revolting autobiography of former New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey, who detailed his life as a closeted homosexual in the corridors of American political power. McGreevey admitted that in his considerable experience, the entire American governing class was riddled with perversion, and I asked a rhetorical question: “how many more highly placed people in government and the corporate world are secret sodomites and dykes? How many of these perverts do we have ruling us?”
Well, speak of the devil. According to an ABC news article, “The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it’s examining whether former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley’s communications with teenage congressional pages violated state law.” The page in question was a sixteen year-old boy whom Foley had been pelting with “sexually suggestive” e-mails.
Congressman Mark Foley is now rushing into rehab as if molesting teenage boys is a by-product of alcohol abuse. One can practically hear Foley exclaim “Feel sorry for me. I have a disease –alcoholism. It isn’t my fault.” Well, guess what Mr. Foley, being a pedophile IS YOUR FAULT. There is no excuse for behavior so depraved, that even our thoroughly corrupt society still imprisons people for it.
TV Station WPBF received a fax on Sunday allegedly from Mark Foley describing his “longstanding significant alcohol and emotional difficulties.” Uh, okay. If these are of long standing, then presumably Foley knew about them when he repeatedly offered himself for re-election to the Florida voters.
I wonder if his campaign spots said: “Hi, I’m Tom Foley! I’m a drunk, but I’d rather make decisions on war and multi-billion dollar legislation in a drunken haze than step aside and get my act sorted out. And I’ve got some worse problems you’ll be hearing about later.”
The ABC article reports that “…White House counselor Dan Bartlett, appearing on several of the Sunday talk shows, said the allegations against the Florida Republican are shocking.” Ah, wait, but there’s more! “Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid called the Foley case ‘repugnant.’” This from the party that gave us Bill Clinton, the Vincent Foster murder, the Dick Morris toe-sucking incident, and the notorious Monica Lewinsky.
According to the same article “…Reid said ‘equally as bad is the possibility’ that House Republican leaders ‘knew there was a problem and ignored it to preserve a congressional seat this election year.’ ” Oh, nerts! OF COURSE the GOP knew that Foley was a sexual predator known as a chicken hawk (not to be confused with the pro-war neocons, who evaded service in the Vietnam War, also known as chickenhawks). Washington DC is a goldfish bowl and no one can keep such a secret forever. The fact that Foley went so far as to use the House computer system to cruise for young boys online indicates that he wasn’t even that concerned about being exposed. The ABC article notes: “WPBF (an ABC affiliate television station) discovered a MySpace profile… linked to the e-mail address Foley was allegedly using to contact the now 17-year-old teenager.” Now that’s madness added to perversion.
Foley has resigned his House seat, but this is almost certainly due to the impending November elections and the necessity of the neocons retaining every single seat they have lest they lose control of one or both houses of Congress. Prior to being exposed as a loathsome pervert, Foley had been considered a shoo-in for re-election to a seventh term. His district includes the ultra-wealthy enclave of the ruling elite, Palm Beach, a hotbed of gossip where any kind of sexual or financial peccadillo is bread and butter to our jaded lords and ladies. Does anyone seriously believe the Palm Beach glitterati did not know about Foley’s perversion?
We are ruled by filth. We have traitorous neocons and a large clique of pedophiles ruling over us. The sooner America wakes up and starts voting for Third Parties, the sooner we can clean out the den of inequity in Washington.
