Massive Grass Roots Effort to Impeach Bush
by James Buchanan
A recent news article reports “More than 30 Vermont towns passed resolutions on Tuesday seeking to impeach President Bush, while at least 16 towns in the tiny New England state called on Washington to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq… Residents of Burlington were voting on a separate question calling for a new investigation into the September 11 attacks.” On the opposite coast, another news article notes that nothing could stop “a State Senate Committee in Olympia Thursday from hearing the case to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney… Anti-war activists filled the hearing room and an overflow space while Republicans boycotted the event. A first-term Democratic Senator is sponsoring the proposal, which asks Congress to consider impeachment. Among those invited to lay out the grounds for impeachment was the mayor of Salt Lake City. Rocky Anderson has become a vocal advocate for putting the Bush administration on trial.”
If there were ever a massive grass roots effort to impeach a bad president, this is it! What makes the case against George Bush so compelling is that a brand new war or act of colossal incompetence is entirely probable as long as he stays in office. The neocons have been ginning up lies for a war against Iran for months. It’s only a matter of time before a new terrorist attack is fabricated so that Bush gets his excuse for war.
A news article from a year ago notes “A Zogby International poll showed that 51 percent of respondents agreed that Bush should be impeached if he lied about Iraq, a far greater percentage than believed former President Clinton should be impeached during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.” The Downing Street memos should have made it clear beyond any reasonable doubt that we were deliberately lied into the Iraq War. After doing an investigation, Ambassador Joe Wilson told the Bush administration that Iraq wasn’t seeking uranium in Niger, but Bush and Colin Powell made that false claim in public speeches prior to the war.
Curiously there have been very few opinion polls about the issue of impeaching Bush. The Zogby poll was paid for by AfterDowningStreet.org (a grass roots outfit supporting impeachment). While it’s understandable that a pollster might think an impeachment poll wouldn’t get a lot of support and so they wouldn’t do one. But there’s really no excuse -now- after the Zogby poll showed a 51 percent support for impeachment. Every major pollster should be doing a poll on this issue every month or two. If Richard Nixon were president, you can bet they would be doing impeachment polls. Because Bush is in bed with the pro-Israel neocons, it appears he’s getting relatively easy treatment.
If anyone doubts that there is massive public support for an impeachment, just google the words “Impeach Bush.” Not only are there countless blogs calling for the impeachment of Bush, there are many professional quality websites and organizations which have been formed by ordinary Americans, who believe the rule of law is still important and that the Bush-Cheney regime should be held accountable for their crimes. One website has collected over 850,000 “signatures” for impeachment citing twenty impeachment charges against both Bush and Cheney. An increasingly long list of patriotic writers have called for Bush’s impeachment. The most common impeachment charges involve lying us into war, torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib and illegal warrantless spying on Americans. Pat Buchanan has recommended impeaching Bush for his failure to secure the Mexican border, allowing 20 million illegal aliens to invade our nation.
While an impeachment of Bush and Cheney would be carrying out the will of the American people, our political “representatives” are almost certain not to do it. The Israeli Lobby wanted the war on Iraq. That’s why Congress voted to give George Bush a blank check for war, blindly ignoring the neocon warmongers who had moved into Bush’s inner circle. To punish Bush over the Iraq War would be to punish Bush for doing something Israel was demanding. Americans need to vote out of power every single Senator and Representative friendly to the Israeli Lobby. These pro-Zionist politicians always steal money from our treasury to give Israel billions every year, and they have shown themselves willing to spill American blood to destroy nations, which Israel has on its “black list.” Why would these Congressmen punish someone for fighting an illegal war for Israel while they are equally guilty?
