Local Politicians Fight Illegal Alien Problem
by James Buchanan

Finally after ignoring the problem for decades, local politicians are admitting that illegal immigration is a serious problem. The endless propaganda, praising immigrants, by the Feds and mass media has finally been challenged by someone with actual political power. Any law designed to fight the illegals -even on a town by town basis- is a huge improvement and a great first step.
A recent New York Times article reports “Tom Macklin, the mayor of this faded city deep in Florida’s citrus belt, heard the idea on talk radio and latched on with relish. A city up north, Hazleton, Pa., planned to root out and punish landlords who rented to illegal immigrants, fining them $1,000 for every such tenant. Mr. Macklin, whose own small city has swelled with immigrants from Mexico, Haiti and Jamaica over the past decade, swiftly proposed the same for Avon Park. ‘It was almost as if I was sitting in church at a revival and he was preaching to me,’ “
The same article continues ” ‘If we address the housing issue — make it as difficult as possible for illegals to find safe haven in Avon Park — then they are going to have to find someplace else to go.’ Like Hazleton’s proposal, Avon Park’s would deny business permits to companies that knowingly hired illegal immigrants. The ordinance, which states that illegal immigration ‘destroys our neighborhoods and diminishes our overall quality of life,’ would also make English the official language of Avon Park, removing Spanish from all city documents, signs and automated phone messages.”
There’s an old saying that “all politics is local.” If millions of soccer moms are outraged that their local public schools are crammed full of Spanish-speaking illegal alien children, then no amount of lying by the Feds or the mass media can cover up this problem or pacify the outraged.
The 2006 election will be a close one. Thanks to the bungling by George W. Bush, many incumbent Republicans are facing very serious threats to their re-election. The Iraq War is an enormous albatross around the neck of the GOP. In order to get another term in office many Republican Congressmen need a populist issue that can save their butts. Only the immigration issue is big enough to blot out all else. The illegal alien issue is moving from the small towns, to Congressional Representatives and soon we may see a few Senators kicked out of office because they didn’t take this issue seriously.
