Iranian President Calls for Committee to Study the Holocaust

You could hear the screams from Tel Aviv to the sidewalks of New York, as millions of Jews simultaneously shrieked in horror and outrage. Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad termed the Holocaust a “myth” and asked for a committee to be set up to prove that the massacre of some six million Jews in Nazi Germany never took place. What? Actually EXAMINE HISTORICAL FACT with respect to the Second World War? Unthinkable! Oy!
A news article reports “Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday called for a free debate on the Holocaust. ‘The West should be free-minded enough to allow a free international debate on the real dimensions of the Holocaust,’ Ahmadinejad said in a press conference in Tehran. The Iranian president caused international uproar after he… branded the Holocaust as a fairy tale and demanded a relocation of Israel to Europe or America. ‘I stand firm on what I said but I am head of the executive branch and not a scholar, so let scholars get to the truth and not shut them down…”
The Iranian president was recently misquoted by CNN. A news article reports “late Monday night, the president’s office called for the ministry to annul its decision banning CNN from working in Iran and asked that the network be allowed to continue working there as before. IRNA reported Monday that the Iranian government banned CNN journalists from working in the country after a translation error broadcast by CNN mistakenly quoted Iran’s president as saying his nation has the right to build nuclear weapons. CNN was not informed directly by the Iranian government that it was banned from the country. The dispute arises from a moment of simultaneous translation Saturday.”
Considering that the same team of neocons who pushed us into the war on Iraq are pushing for a war on Iran, it’s hard to blame the Iranian president for being more than a little suspicious. How does a translator mistake “nuclear energy” for “nuclear weapons” without doing so deliberately??
The Holocaust is more likely disbelieved than believed in the Muslim world. They do not teach the Holocaust as an unchallenged fact. In recent months British historian David Irving was thrown in jail in Austria for questioning the Holocaust. Many nations in Europe have made Holocaust Denial a crime. This makes life very tenous for any Gentile historian who wishes to research or publish any work on the Holocaust. If just one Jew complains to the authorities, the historian could be going straight to jail no matter how fact-based his research might be.
Aren’t backward Third World nations supposed to throw people in jail for challenging the “official” version of history? Isn’t this the impression that most Europeans and Americans have of the Third World while considering their home nations bastions of free speech? Why then is free speech banned on the Holocaust? Why are Europeans faced with jail and Americans faced with persecution if they suggest that there are some problems with the claim that six million Jews died in Europe during World War Two? What sinister forces are at work limiting our freedom and controlling the information made available to us?
