An Amnesty Near Miss?
by James Buchanan

A very strange political episode just played out over the last two weeks. A June 23rd article on NumbersUSA.com reported “Several Senators have learned of a possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation’s 11-18 million illegal aliens. Led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can’t secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate. The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if 60 votes can’t be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.”
It sounds as though Obama (or more accurately Rahm Emanuel) may have been on the verge of attempting a wholesale Amnesty for all the illegal aliens in the US. The new Arizona immigration law SB1070 goes into force this month, and some of the more militant liberals probably wanted to do something to preempt that law.
Reportedly some senior Senators told Obama (and Rahm) “Don’t even try” to pull off an Amnesty through Executive Order. Still, another alarm went out on June 30th that some sore of “limited Amnesty” would be introduced by Obama. A variety of patriotic websites (including this one), called on Americans to call up their Senators and demand that there would be no surprise Amnesty.
This last minute campaign may have had an effect because Obama’s speech appeared to wander around aimlessly, mouthing the usual platitudes that liberals always say about illegals and then the speech ended with —-nothing. It was as if someone took a big red marker and crossed off whatever he wanted to say.
I strongly suspect some senior Democrat Senators called Obama (and Rahm) aside and told him no Amnesty of any kind was going through. As much as the Democrats would love to legalize 20 million illegal aliens, the voters would slaughter them in the November election in retaliation.
The America public is getting more and more radical lately. One article notes “What is the Tea Party? A growing state of mind. The Tea Party is less a classic political movement than a frustrated state of mind. A year and a half after the idea of a Tea Party burst into view, three of 10 Americans describe themselves in the USA TODAY/Gallup Poll as Tea Party supporters — equal to the number who call themselves Republicans — though many of them acknowledge they aren’t exactly sure what that allegiance means.”
The angriest people always seem to be the most inclined to vote. If three out of ten Americans openly identify themselves as Tea Party supporters, it would be a huge mistake to do something, such as a massive Amnesty, that will add trillions of dollars to the national debt. Tea stands for “Taxed Enough Already” and making citizens out of an additional 20 million illegals can only create a huge jump in taxes.
We appear to be safe from an Amnesty for now, but we need to watch Obama and the Democrats like a hawk and pounce on them with a barrage of angry phone calls if they ever start thinking about trying this again.
