Obama Appointee Persecuted People over Wood Furnaces
by James Buchanan
A recent article notes “If Lisa Jackson runs the federal environmental agency the way she’s run the state agency, then a whole lot of Americans are going to face some unpleasant surprises. Ask Nick Scamuffa. Or Mandy Drummey. Both Scamuffa and Drummey live on large wooded lots in Hunterdon County. Like many rural residents who have lots of wood lying around, each decided to heat the house with a hydronic heating system. The system consists of a wood-burning furnace that sits out in the yard heating water that is pumped into the house through underground pipes… a Hunterdon County official… proceeded to tell him his heating system was illegal. ‘He basically said, ‘You need to shut it down,’ and that I had 30 days to respond to the county as to what my plans are for shutting it down,’ said Scamuffa. Scamuffa wasn’t happy. He’d spent more than $12,000 installing the system four years ago and had gotten all the necessary permits. He couldn’t figure out just what law he was breaking…”
What is truly shocking is that no one complained about the alleged pollution from these wood burning furnaces. Apparently commissars sent out by the state decided to persecute these otherwise law-abiding Americans for no good reason at all. Were hefty fines by the government the ultimate goal of this latest crackdown?
Most normal Americans would congratulate these people for being self-sufficient, but not our evil government. They collect taxes on utilities, and these efforts to shut down furnaces could easily be the result of utility companies pressuring politicians to force as many Americans as possible to hook up and use as much of their electricity as possible.
What are people in rural areas supposed to use for heat? If they can’t use wood, then they’ll likely switch to propane or fuel oil. Most people in rural areas don’t have access to natural gas. Electricity can be very expensive, and the electricity for rural areas would most likely be produced by a generator on the property or a larger generator for the local community which also burns fuel.
This latest tyranny may just be a preview of what’s coming. The fact that Obama wants to promote the woman, who was doing this suggests that the Obama administration will be much more intrusive and oppressive than most people think.
